What is The Header Tag
The
header tag is a section of your source code that is not visible to the
human visitor except for the Title tag (explained below). The Header is
the first part of the source code that a search engines spider visits,
the search engines take the majority of the information for your site
from the tags that are found in the header section.
Title Tag
Possibly
the most important tag for a website, the title tag is the first tag in
the header section that a search engine picks up. The title tag should
start with the main keyword of your site and contain no more than 6
words – placing more than 6 words in the title tag will give less
weight to each keyword which inturn will hamper your listings.
Meta Description
The
Meta Description tag used to be a very powerful tag, due to
overspamming this tag many top search engines place less emphasis on
the description tag. Though no longer as powerful as the title tag, the
description tag can still help towards improving your listings. The
keyword must be placed at the begining of this tag and contain between
12 and 25 words.
Meta Keywords
This
tag tells the search engines what your main keywords are for the page
the search engine is visiting. No more than 2 keywords should be placed
in this tag, again similar to the title tag the more keywords you place
in this tag, the less weight is given to each keyword.
Robot Tags
The
robot tag is sometimes overlooked, this is an extremely important tag
as it gives the search engines permission to index and cache your
website pages, by placing the correct coding into this tag will let the
search engines know exactly what pages they can index.
